Drawn to Woodcut NEW!
Tutor: Sandy Sykes MA

Woodcut and print with daring and originality using a variety of relief surfaces. Experience cutting with conventional and unconventional tools, rubbing and printing. Papers from luxurious to ‘throw away’ will enliven your ideas, which will spring naturally from the experimental processes.

Course Outline:
Course Day 1
You will be drawing through a series of experimental methods and a variety of materials as suggested by Sandy. Different papers and printing surfaces will be tried and exploited in a rapid confidence building mark-making session. Playing with cutting, sticking and taping, new viewpoints, different spaces and a fun attitude will relax your old rules and stimulate fresh imagery.
A short demonstration on inking and rubbing a selection of surfaces, including wood and monotype drawing with a variety of tools and methods.
You will be working individually, drawing into inked surfaces to make monotypes, printing from wooden surfaces and making personal developments from ideas generated in the morning.
Course Day 2
Continuing individual practice with cutting and printing, and any other methods experienced so far. Experiment and play as you did in the morning but now with more focus and personal intent
How to carry the new experiences and experiments into a body of work in day three?
Course Day 3
Introduction to the final print project.
Personal discussions with Sandy throughout the morning as you continue to cut surfaces and print from them. You are narrowing your focus but not your fun.
Qualities of surface, scale, or colour of associated images, words or symbols will now start to demonstrate your intentions.
