Sandy Sykes

Sandy Sykes works in her Essex studio surrounded by fields, the estuary and the sea. Her awareness of the natural world is a major catalyst to her thinking. Drawing is the basis of her entire philosophy and vision and is essential to the production of her work in any discipline. References to visual and literary influences, from many countries and throughout history invest her work with a wry humour. Printmaking allows the unexpected and playful permutations of thought and image to gather humour and horror together in equal part, allowing ideas, connections and allusions the space to move, change and re-form. Sykes has long been interested in boundaries, borders and demarcation lines. The plight of the refugee or the experience of the traveller, have become a focus in our war torn world. She brings together present and past mythologies, stories of destruction and survival, the importance of hope and laughter. Sketchbooks record the complexity of life, its history and its art.
