Sally Taylor

'The drawings of Sally Taylor seem to be in a constant state of urgent communication. She is immersed in a daily studio practice that repeatedly affirms the primacy of the hand drawn mark.' Jonathan Parsons

A desire to understand more about human relationships underpins the work of Sally Taylor, particularly that of her own interaction with others. Recent work has developed into an investigation of the dynamics of social groups; how hierarchies are formed, roles are assumed and behaviours are managed.

Wide open mouths full of triangles is one of the many recurring motifs that have emerged, been repeatedly revisited, reworked and left unresolved in up to sometimes 200 drawings a day. The triangle and 'smiling mouths' making reference to Louise Bourgeois' statement 'triangles mean danger' alongside social constructs surrounding the unsaid and non-verbal interaction.

Sally Taylor purposefully works on salvaged bits of ordinary used paper and inner sleeves of old books, rather than confine herself to conform to what is deemed suitable or fit for purpose. These surfaces bear the marks of social exchange, traces of histories in the form of previous marks, imperfections and doodles. A muted but articulate dialogue then continues to ensue as 'Confused Head(s)' and the mouth motif or 'life force', as Taylor describes it, engulf the pages of innumerable drawings. Repetition and ritual are integral to her practice, allowing her take her ideas on a journey and learn more about the process of drawing.
