Emma Stibbon RA

About The Artist

Landscape is a central concern in Emma Stibbon's practice. Often working from places that put a perspective on the viewer, her work considers environments that are in a condition of flux or change. As an artist working primarily in drawing and print, she sets out to explore whether drawing can present a visual space for reflection and engagement with contemporary issues of transition and change in our surroundings.

Stibbon's practice emerges through gathering research 'in the field', observing through drawing, the camera and moving image. This is supported by dialogue with scientists, glaciologists, historians and archivists, and intensive periods of bringing this together in the studio. The work that emerges is part document/part fiction.

Her current research project explores the landscape of the Grand Canyon in Colorado. Her projects propose whether there is a valid role for the contemporary artist as explorer and witness. Previously Stibbon has documented the ice shelves and glaciers of the Polar Regions. In large-scale work Stibbon explores the potential of drawing as a means of understanding and reflecting on our fragile relationship with remote places.
