Nana Shiomi

Biography

NANA SHIOMI MA RCA RE

Born in Osaka, JAPAN
1975-1981 Tama Art University (BA, MA), Tokyo, JAPAN
1989-1991 Royal College of Art, London, UK
Based in London since 1989

Filled with a desire to learn more about the world, I left my native Japan and came to live in England. But as I struggled towards my goal of becoming an international artist, I began to realise that if I were to embody internationalism in its truest sense, I must first understand my own national background.
I cast aside my own point of view and re-examined myself from the perspective of 'the other'. It was not the quickest path to take. It was only by travelling half way around the world to another country and through living in London as a foreigner, that I could find the well I must dig. Here I found my Japanese-ness!
